In the spring of 1980, Michael was graduating High School in Brainerd, MN and was about to leave for college when his former High School basketball coach introduced him to "Cash Value" Life Insurance.
Being raised in a single parent household beginning in third grade, things didn't come easy for Michael and his family. Having a mother that worked long hours, it was up to Michael and his grandmother to watch over and care for his younger sisters most days. It was this "call to duty" that instilled Michael's work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit as he felt a need and a want to better his family's life. From this early age, Michael would mow lawns in the summer, rake leaves and split firewood in the fall, and shovel sidewalks and driveways in the winter.

In 6th grade, Michael added a paper route to the list of jobs he had in an effort to assist his mother in providing for the family. Once Michael was old enough, he was promoted from his paper route to working in the circulation department after school and on weekends for the newspaper. In the summer, worked full time at a local golf resort as the head starter and continued evening work at the newspaper. During these years, Michael was able to save enough money to buy his 1st car, a1968 Cougar XR7 and to pay for college.
After experiencing the loss of a classmate and seeing the additional burden that incident put on that family, Michael knew that he didn't want his family to experience that same effect should something unforeseen happen to him. That's when Michael at the age of 18, acquired his 1st "Cash Value" life insurance policy. That was also the moment that would change his life forever. But not just yet..This was Michael's 1st introduction into the world of finance and investing. Even though his first policy was small in nature, it was a beginning. That first "Cash Value" life insurance policy that Michael purchased always provided him with "peace of mind" knowing that if anything ever happened to him, he would not be an additional burden to his family that struggled to survive from month to month.
As Michael entered his post college days and entered the work force as a young engineer, he started investing in stocks and mutual funds. Like most investors, Michael experienced the joys of great returns as well as the depression of catastrophic losses.
It was the result of the "dot com" crash in 2000-2002 that caused Michael to start looking at alternative solutions to traditional financial advice as he lost 75% of his at risk portfolio. He knew there had to be something out there that would protect his hard earned money and protect him from the volatility of the markets. That's when he looked back at his original "cash value" life insurance policy and noticed that it had been essentially unaffected by the losses in the market. He thought to himself , "Man, if I could have put more money into that policy, life would be pretty sweet right now".
Then, in 2006, Michael met Doug Andrew at a Mortgage Bankers convention in Las Vegas where he was promoting his new book "Missed Fortune". Doug graciously handed Michael a copy of the book. After reading the forward to this book, Michael was hooked. There it was! There was the way that he could put more money and deposit it as fast as possible into "Cash Value Life Insurance". He knew he was onto something big.
Michael spent the next week reading, re-reading, and reverse engineering the numbers and the philosophy behind Indexed Universal Life Insurance and was so enthralled by the concept that he actually called the author, Doug Andrew, at his offices in Salt Lake City. Michael asked Doug if he could come to his office and pay Doug to spend more time with him as he had many questions about this amazing financial concept. As luck would have it, Doug had already scheduled a week long event where some of of the top financial planners in the industry were gathering in his office the following week for the exact same opportunity Michael was seeking. After Doug offered the invitation, Michael wasted no time accepting it and he was off to Utah.
After spending that life changing week with Doug and the other financial planners, Michael knew that he was right. He truly did discover a financial product where there was no risk of loss, the money was always liquid, it provided a historically predictable and favorable rate of return, and best of all, the gains could be accessed completely tax free! He proved to himself that there was no other financial product like it anywhere.
That is the moment Michael knew that he had to share this secret that the wealthy had known about for decades. He had to share this financial strategy with as many people as possible and that is how Clear Diamond Life was born.
As we enter 2017, Michael celebrates his 22nd year in financial services. Hovering above the Earth at an elevation of 29,029 ft, Mt. Everest is truly a breathtaking sight to behold. The experience of climbing the summit has attracted thousands of experienced climbers from all around the world. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first climbers to successfully make it to the summit and back down alive.
What most of us don’t know is that there are over 200 corpses still remaining on Mt. Everest. In 2006 alone, there were 98 people who summited and 11 who died that same year. According to the book titled Dark Summit, 80% of the deaths that have occurred on Mt. Everest in the last 50 years have occurred on the descent. In fact, some hesitation exists to this day whether or not Hillary and Norgay were the first climbers to reach the summit. In 1924, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine set out for the summit and never returned. It has been rumored that one or both of these climbers were able to reach the summit.
Conquering the summit of Everest is a physical challenge unlike any other on earth. On the way up the mountain, climbers are motivated by viewing the spectacular peaks looming ahead and the glory and sense of accomplishment that the summit will bring. However, on the descent, they now have the gravity pulling them towards horrifying views of 10,000 ft drop-offs. Some of the deaths are the result of technical errors, but the vast majority result from climbers not wisely conserving their most precious commodity – OXYGEN. Over 130 of the 200 bodies that still remain on Mt. Everest are located in an area just below the summit commonly referred to as “The Death Zone”.
The Death Zone lies above 26,000ft in the highest altitudes of the mountain. The oxygen level here is not adequate to support human life because the body simply cannot adapt. At this altitude the body uses oxygen faster than it can be replaced. Therefore, if climbers linger in this region too long without supplementary oxygen, they will feel like they’re slowly suffocating.
Many of you reading this today are either nearing the summit of your working years or have already started the descent into retirement. A common thread in our conversations with clients regarding retirement issues is the anxiety generated by the realization that someday there will be a “last paycheck” from employment. Income is the equivalent of oxygen, and most of our clients have concerns about whether or not they will have enough of this precious commodity to maintain their dignity and independence as they navigate through their retirement years.
A sad commentary about the financial planning industry is that many advisors focus on having their clients reach the summit (accumulation phase) of retirement, but very little timing planning a successful descent. Many of these plans were greatly compromised over the past 10-15 years due to the tech bubble of the early 2000s and the “Great Recession” of 2008. Our firm employs strategies that will enhance the likelihood that you won’t outlive your resources.
The story of Mt. Everest and the current landscape of retirement planning have more parallels than we initially think. During the accumulation phase (or on your way up the mountain), the sequence of returns in your portfolio don’t affect you as much. In some instances, they can actually help you. The law of averages takes over during the accumulation phase. However, the sequence of returns once you retire (or hit the summit) now become paramount for your financial descent down the mountain known as retirement years. A large market correction in the early years of retirement can have a horrific effect on our rate of success down the mountain.
